Environmental Conservation

MOSUS is committed to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development for future generations. Recognizing the threats of deforestation, pollution, climate change, and the depletion of natural resources, we have taken initiatives to raise awareness and encourage community participation in environmental protection.

Water and Sanitation Rights Program

Due to the lack of safe drinking water facilities, sanitary latrines, and the prevalence of various waterborne diseases, a large number of deaths—particularly among children under five—occur in Bangladesh each year. In response, MOSUS provides tube wells and sanitary latrines, while also motivating and educating people to use safe drinking water for all household activities, install homemade pit latrines, and adopt proper hygiene practices.

Arsenic Mitigation Project

More than 20 million people in Bangladesh are at risk of arsenic contamination in drinking water, with levels exceeding the maximum permissible limit of 0.05 mg/l. Currently, safe drinking water coverage in Bangladesh is only 39%, while nearly 50% of the population consumes arsenic-contaminated water (BBS, 2006). These people face the risk of arsenicosis, a disease that can ultimately lead to death.

To address this crisis, MOSUS has undertaken an Arsenic Mitigation Project, which includes:

  • Raising awareness on arsenic contamination and prevention.
  • Conducting training on arsenic mitigation.
  • Testing tube well water to identify arsenic contamination.

Improved Cook Stove Program

Biomass energy is the main cooking fuel in Bangladesh, especially in rural areas without access to gas grids. Unfortunately, biomass is becoming scarce, creating a latent fuel crisis in many rural communities. More than 20 million households and over one million institutional and commercial establishments use traditional stoves, which burn biomass inefficiently and pose serious health risks to users due to indoor air pollution.

To address these issues, Manobadhikar O Samaj Unnayan Sangstha (MOSUS) has implemented an Improved Cook Stove Dissemination Program. The main goals are to:

  • Reduce exposure to indoor air pollution.
  • Lower household fuel costs.
  • Promote the widespread use of efficient, health-friendly stoves.
